HOMEWORK

Spellings

The children will be following a structured spelling programme throughout the year based on their personal spelling needs and requirements of the National Curriculum. Children will be given 10 spellings to learn each week, which are tested on a Monday. At the end of a block, children will review the previous weeks to consolidate their learning.

Reading

Good readers make good writers! Ideally children will read every day and record this in their reading diary. Reading to an adult is a useful way of ensuring your child is reading fluently, understands what they are reading and can discuss a text. Independent reading is also important to encourage a love of reading and this can be recorded in the reading diary also. Children should try to vary the type of book they read, selecting a range of different styles and authors. Children should aim to read one book per week, although novels may take longer!

Multiplication tables

By the end of year 4, children should be secure and have quick and accurate recall of multiplication tables to 12x12, in preparation for the National end of year 4 times tables test. Please encourage your child to practise frequently to help with accuracy. Each child is set weekly homework on Times Tables Rock Stars and each Friday we will have a times tables test on one of the tables.

Other homework

Children have a homework book which will be given out each Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. A pencil should be used, and children should take care with presentation as the standard of work is expected to be as high as in class work. Written homework will always support or extend class work, and will usually be a piece of maths or English homework, and sometimes two pieces of homework will be set.

These spellings will be tested every Monday in class.  In between the blocks of spellings there will be a number of weeks where these spellings will be reviewed.
